Boomtick Podcast > D-Funk’s mix for Japan 4.

I recently played for the Boomtick guys at their great venue, Ambar in Perth (Aus). Before the gig they asked me to put together a mix for them. I’ve now put the mix up on my Soundcloud account & you can grab it as a free download or stream it from the player or site!

Boomtick run awesome events in Western Australia like Breakfest as well as Ambar & Villa. D-Funk… ‘Step To My Beat EP’ re-launches Upstart Music!!!

So for the past 2 years or so we’ve been pretty quiet on the release front of my break beat led label Upstart Musicbut we are back with a brand new EP, DJ Mix & release schedule!

First up is a 3 track EP from me. 3 original tunes in a up-beat fashion that take influence from breaks, 2 step, bass, garage, booty & nu skool breaks. I’ve had a blast making & playing this EP over the past few months. It’s a little bit similar to the kind of material I started off releasing a few years back on labels such as Westway Records, Dusted Breaks, Yellowfinger & of course Upstart. Main difference is (hopefully) my production skills have come on since then! But I’ll let you be the judge of that…

I also knocked together a new, club focused DJ Mix that showcases all the track from the EP as well as a bunch of other awesome tunes. It’s a free download too so you can burn it to CD, record it to cassette, give it to your friends or play it in the park!

I recently did this remix for the great breaks label outa Canada, Breakz R Boss Records. The original is a pretty heavy breaks number so I tried to inject a little funk into it but still wanted it to be on a breaks tip. Came out pretty good I think!

Release #3 from the 2Dogs stable brings you another 7″ this time via beat aficionados’ Mr Doris (We Love, Ibiza eclectic resident DJ) & D-Funk (Grits N Gravy & Upstart Music).

Kicking things off is ‘Lock Shit Down’, a gem of a mash up which takes the vox from Chali 2na ft. Talib Kweli and lays down over the all time classic, ‘Supernatural Thing’ by soulpremo, Ben E King.

On the flip is ‘9th Wonder, a good old fashioned party Hip Hopper of a tune which skilfully (and lovingly) underpins things with the wondrous ‘Impeach The President’ by The Honeydrippers then adds vocals stripped from ‘9th Wonder’ by the Digable Planets resulting in a turnout of pure Funk goodness.

I’ve teamed up with long term Pacha, Ibiza resident Nicc Johnson (under his Sugar Ray guise) to deliver a 4 track EP that’s a little disco inspired gem! Together we’ve crafted 3 tracks, 2 mid tempo, Nu disco type cuts & 1 more up beat housey number. We’ve also drafted in Sydney’s The Owl on remix duties for 1 of the tracks. D-Funk presents… ‘Tracks from the smelly cellar’.

So this is the first in my series of ‘Tracks from the smelly cellar’ where I’ll be giving away a load of edits/bootlegs/mash up/tracks I’d put together for my DJ sets & haven’t seen the light of day yet.

This is a edit I put together of Tori Amos’s ‘Professional Window’. I actually edited a great nu disco bootleg that was made Social Disco Club & added extra beats, vocals, edits & bass. I wouldn’t normally give away an edit of an edit but i think this one is different enough from both the original & their bootleg to warrant it. It’s also had great reactions when I’ve played it out so thought I’d share the love!

So I’ve been meaning to do this mix for ages. I was sitting by the pool in Bali & thought to myself, as the sun beat down upon my brow, I should really do a pool type chill mix. So I done did one! It’s not a ‘chill out’ mix like the baleric one’s like Cafe Del Mar & the such. More of my sound track to music I’d listen to in the sun. All the tracks on here are nice & chilled but the mix takes in Soul, Funk, Disco, Hip Hop, Downtempo, Nu Jazz & joins it all together in a 80 min musical, dare I say journey.
